“Compared to the unleashed forces of warfare and of faith, Mount Vesuvius was kinder to the legacy of antiquity.” The reason I chose this line is because I think it plays a big role in the chapter. Though the people of Herculaneum had passed with the mountain blowing up, the building and artifacts were still there from the ancient Romans. From the remains they discovered a lot about the ways of living, religion, and their time technology and how they modernized and still use their techniques.

(Ch 4 Pg 85-86)

“Large number of men and women-for there are records of female as well as male copyists-spent their lives bent over paper, with an inkwell, ruler, and hard split-reed pen, satisfying the demand for books.” I find this passage really unique because they didn’t have any machines or factories like we do today, they had a bunch of men and women working for cheap to get out the books at any cost.

I think a perfect comparison would be any shopping or clothing brand making their products in the factories. Like I said earlier in today’s age we have machines and less workers now but we still get the product out that the people want.

My question is would they be able to find a way using less labor on the men and women?
