The Swerve Ch 5

2-1-Q

(Pg 115) “What Poggio accomplished, in collaboration with a few others, remains startling…”  “served as the basis for the development of italics.” Poggio knew he had a hidden talent with his writing because nobody at the time had as beautiful handwriting as him. I believe this shows importance because it’s the start of his uprising in a way. Poggio knew Florence had all the money and wealth, so as a teenager he decided to move all the way there to start his career. I believe it says a lot about him.

(Ch 5 Pg 120)

“The humanists felt for themselves, with mingled pride, wonder, and fear, to be involved in an epochal movement. In wonder, and fear, to be involved recognizing that something that had seemed alive was really dead. Though they were discovering information that was about a past civilization, to them it was new and fascinating and not only that they were able to use what we have learned throughout our years in the real world today.

A good thing I would compare this to is the use of school today. For years we learn about the past and current lifestyles, ways of living, and more about their culture. When the time comes and we’re finally mature or old enough, we live on our own and be able to use what they taught us from what we learned.

The question I have about this chapter is Why is Simon Humiliated?
