Khy Ray James may immediately catch people’s attention as “a 6 ‘5 black kid that plays basketball.” However, Khy argues that “I’m more than that.”

I recently had the chance to have a conversation with the University of New England’s incoming sophomore. We talked about his previous season on the court, but it soon became clear that Khy Ray James is much more than simply a player; he is a leader, a thinker, and someone who tries to change things on and off the court.

Ray’s development into a phenomenal basketball player started long before he enrolled in college. He was taught early on the importance of dedication, discipline, and hard work while growing up in Washington, D.C., with his two older brothers. “Basketball has always been my first love but I want to be known for my achievements off the court just as much,” said Ray.

“My brothers made it clear that basketball comes to an end at one point and the real world starts.” His outlook on life has been influenced by that basis. Although he attended the University of New England to play basketball, his concentration goes well beyond the game.

James had an entirely different perspective going into college as a result of this realism . He was attending UNE to develop, give back, and get ready for a time when basketball might not be the primary plot point. He wasn’t just there to be an athlete.

James’s career as a college basketball player started much differently than other freshmen. Due to his size, he was able to play early and seized every chance that came his way. The Nor’Easters needed someone who could make an impact right away, and James was eventually given the opportunity to start toward the end of the season after starting off the bench.

James’s constant drive for progress demonstrates his strong work ethic. “I’ve always believed in myself and the talents god has given me,” he stated. As a result of such a mentality, he has gained the respect of his colleagues and established himself as a formidable role model for new players. When speaking to James’s teammates they had very positive remarks.

“Ray is always the first guy in the gym and one of the last guys to leave”, says Jayden Thorton. Thornton is a junior on the team and has been good friends with James for almost two years now. When asking Thorton if he’s seen him make an impact on campus he replied, “Ray is always working or helping out around here. I know he’s already an RA but he’s also a ball boy on the football team at all the home games. He also gives our recruits on the basketball team tours of the campus when they come up”.

James has gained the respect of his teammates, coaches, and the larger UNE community because to his all-in commitment.

The next thing I wanted to know is how has helped out with the UNE community. Tyrone Gomes, a sophomore nursing major who is also a RA was able to tell me more about James.

“Ray overall is a very helpful guy on and off the court. When we have a lot of things going on for possible incoming freshman, having his own table at these events and talking to future nor’easters about the positives of coming to this university is like. Other than that Ray is a good friend as well, whenever you need him there he will be there as fast as he can.”

James knows that he is more than just an athlete at the University and is not afraid to say it at all. “Basketball is like a tool, and I want them to understand that, for both you and other people, it’s a platform to open doors and create chances,” he emphasized.

James is, in fact, fighting for something far greater during a time when young athletes are often defined by highlights clips and stat sheets. Other than being a great player, he wants to be known for taking advantage of every chance to develop, mentor, and give back.

One thing became clear as our discussion came to an end, James represents a young man with a vision. His personality type, and desire to leave a lasting impression are what characterize him more than just his athletic prowess.

“Basketball might be what people notice first,” he laughed, “but I’m building a legacy that goes far beyond the game.”
